When you think about facelifts, it’s possible you picture the dreaded “wind tunnel” look, complete with overly tight skin and obvious scars. It’s one reason many people today are hesitant to consider a facelift procedure even when it’s clearly the best solution to their aesthetic concerns. In truth, the facelift techniques of the past that created those types of results are long gone. The facelift techniques I use at my Boston plastic surgery practice create results that look natural.
In this blog post, we’ll look at the 3 main benefits of today’s facelift.
1. Deeper Correction
One of the major drawbacks of facelifts performed several years is that they produced a tight, pulled-back look that sacrificed natural appearances for the sake of eliminating sagging. When this technique became popular, facelifts were only designed to address the skin. Because skin droops quickly, surgeons would over-tighten it to help extend the results for as long as possible.
I specialize in a more modern approach called the high-SMAS or deep-plane technique. This method addresses the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) below the skin, allowing me to make deeper corrections by repositioning tissue and muscle below the skin. The skin is then gently draped back over these tissues, resulting in a younger appearance without the telltale skin tightening.
With this approach, we can:
- Restore volume to the cheeks
- Reduce jowls
- Define the jawline
- Sculpt the chin
- Smooth lines and wrinkles
Scars are easily hidden around the ears and within the hairline.
2. Longer-Lasting Results
On their own, high-SMAS facelifts are long-lasting procedures. While nothing can stop the aging process altogether, a facelift can effectively turn back the clock by up to a decade, allowing for several years of rejuvenation.
However, the use of injectable treatments now enables us to extend these results even longer. By injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic and injectable fillers during quick appointments at our medical spa, we can keep wrinkling and volume loss at bay for months at a time. This means you’ll be able to enjoy your results for longer without having to opt for another surgical procedure.
3. Minimal Invasiveness
Plastic surgeons now have a more nuanced understanding of facial anatomy. This helps us deliver optimal correction through the least invasive means possible. Keep in mind that although “thread” or “skin only” lifts are the least invasive option, they also provide the least correction. My priority is creating the right amount of improvement for my patients while helping them get back to their usual lives as quickly as possible.
